Now…

Look, let’s cut to the chase, this post has become a pain in the proverbial. I posted it over a year ago when Tumblr famously fell over, the image was a play on the splash screen that was set up, apparently there was an issue with the database clusters.

Anyway, in the interim the image has managed to get itself listed reasonably well on Google, so I get lots of hits to my blog, and to be honest people bounce off, this isn’t good for my stats.

Anyway if you are going to bounce off why not got to my Tumblr? It’s here.

I will now return you to the original post…

…and Then

Two hours and counting and the blogging platform is still down. Whatever are we to do without The Daily What and all those other delightful blogs?

According to The Next Web and CenterNetworks, Tumblr has been down for two hours now, causing a lot of derision among folks on Twitter.

Tumblr has taken to Twitter to inform followers of what’s afoot: “We’re working quickly to recover from a major issue in one of our database clusters. We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”

As those who regularly use the platform know, Tumblr going down is no unique occurrence. Still, two hours is a rather lengthy stretch of time” especially for a company that’s been rapidly growing and garnering funding of late.
source

My car has just gone in to have a repair, there is a problem with the part, an oil line, it is incredibly inconvenient. My personal transport of choice is a motorbike but I tend to get a bit ‘wussy’ when the outdoor temperature is being defined in negative terms. We rely on this technology and by and large it works, the effect of it not working can be damaging if not planned for, eggs and baskets?

Tumblr is down and it has been for quite a while, now. I woke up to a Tweet from Mashable (below) which was already ‘old’. The world won’t come to an end, planes won’t fall out of the sky but… “we’ll be back shortly” isn’t really cutting it.

This is in anyone’s terms a big downtime but please don’t call me shortly. Database Cluster? Sounds like the new chocolate that will be left in the selection box for that last desperate act of post Christmas binging.

Anyway, it is good to see a bit of opportunism re-defined here

What They Are Saying On Twitter

@crsfrncs Owen’s Ordinary
Uh oh! RT @JohnGotty: i think Tumblr died.

@RichcBarrett Rich Barrett
Holy cow, Tumblr is still down? Why? Did Julian Assange start a WikiLeaks Tumblr or something?

@chris24 Chris Thomson
If Twitter went down today, where would people learn about the Twitter AND Tumblr outages, since they’re both each other’s status sites?

@Amberjolie Amber Jolie Horn

@Paxochka Pax Paxochka by misogravy
Tumblr is still down? When twitter goes down it’s only for a few minutes at a time. Ah I get it…. twitter is the guy in the relationship

@KuangEleven Craig
I reckon when Tumblr finally comes back it’ll be zombiefied after spending so long dead. Tumblie? Zomblr?

As a footnote, less than half an hour later I did a Google search “tumblr is still down”. For all of its occasional fragility this stuff still knocks me out. Surely sad, but still not shortly.

“tumblr is still down\

As a further footnote the guys at Perry and Prouse in Exeter fixed the SAAB and Tumlbr is still down.

Thankfully Tumblr returned…

Downtime

Yesterday afternoon, during planned maintenance that was not intended to interrupt service, an issue arose that took down a critical database cluster. This brought down our entire network while our engineers worked feverishly to restore these databases and bring your blogs back online.

While you might feel like you’ve gotten used to seeing errors on Tumblr recently, know that this is absolutely unacceptable to our team, and unacceptable for a platform determined to be the best place in the world for your creative expression.

Frankly, keeping up with growth has presented more work than our small team was prepared for ” with traffic now climbing more than 500M pageviews each month. But we are determined and focused on bringing our infrastructure well ahead of capacity as quickly as possible. We’ve nearly quadrupled our engineering team this month alone, and continue to distribute and enhance our architecture to be more resilient to failures like today’s.

We can’t apologize enough, nor can we thank you enough for putting up with these growing pains. We know how impossibly frustrating it is to see your work offline. But please always know that we truly care about your work as much as you do, and we have an incredibly capable team working incredibly hard to take good care of it.”

Sorry we let you down today.

P.S. If our staff blog is ever unreachable, you can check our Twitter stream for updates.

P.P.S. Anyone that had a paid Directory Feature running through the last two days has had it automatically extended 36 hours.
