Currently I am experiencing a strong desire to do some photography, just for the sake of it and to be honest ideally it would be using a camera something like this, or a Leica maybe. Simple mechanical, silent and strong. Quality whichever way you look at it.

Working on behalf of Yorkshire’s Techserv Cutting Systems, Exeter based Design Credo have created a brand for a range of newly developed machines.

More Than a Logo

The scope of the project extended beyond simple graphic design and logo design. Design Credo initially advised on product names creating a ‘brand-family’. Part of this advice extended to researching suitable domain names.

The rationale behind the logo design was to create a simple clear design that would communicate the accuracy and quality of the Techserv products. The logos were designed using simple geometric shapes with reference to the letters a&j, p&j, r&j.

Techserv have already commissioned Design Credo to photograph the first of these machines.

Exeter design company Design Credo is extremely pleased with the initial performance of the WordPress website that they have created on behalf of Topsham’s Nest interiors. The site has well and truly hit the ground running with large numbers of visitors already viewing the site on a daily basis.

The built-in capabilities of this WordPress site enable us to see that within days of going live the site is getting extremely good viewing figures. This is like having hundreds of extra people looking around the shop on a daily basis.

The website is based on the WordPress platform but has been designed to give a strong visual appeal. DesignCredo have undertaken photography for Nest Interiors to strengthen their existing stock of images. The site aims to capture and convey the rich visual appeal of the Nest Interiors shop.

Great SEO results

A great website is of little value unless it can be found. Of course searching on the company’s name puts it top but more relevant search strings such as ‘new + england + style + furniture + devon’ perform extremely well, less than a week from the site being live. Further to this simple search strings such as “Lexington + Devon” provide first page Google results with more detailed searches such as “Lexington + Chesapeake + Cushion” giving a position 1 on a worldwide Google search.

This is extremely important for a company selling quality brand items such as those from Lexington. Putting it simply Nest interiors although based in Topsham near Exeter in the South-West of England are able to create national and international interest.

Add to this the inclusion of PubSubHubbub technology to ensure almost immediate submission of website developments to Google and we have a very search engine friendly site.

However, this is just the start. Design Credo will use various collectable data to monitor where site-traffic comes from and will continue to develop content that will create a good hit with Google searches.

Working on behalf of Turner-Locker the Exeter based commercial property agency, Alder King and Urbina the project has so far included photography, branding and graphic design.

Renslade House offers a prime office location with excellent location and varied transport options. the building has benefitted from recent refurbishments and offers great possibilities for a wide range of organisations. Renslade House already has a number of high profile occupants.

Photography

Initially Design Credo photographed the building exterior, recent refurbishments and common facilities.

Supporting photography was commissioned to add focus to the excellent location of Renslade House, particularly to rail networks and quality city centre facilities such as Princesshay.

Branding

Before creating the brochure Design Credo developed a simple brand. The Podium@Renslade House name had been previously chosen and focusses on the remaining space. Colour ways were chosen to compliment those present in the Renslade House interior.

Design

Due to the needs of this kind of commission large print runs are not necessary and would be both unnecessarily costly and environmentally inconsiderate. This brochure has been designed as an A4 four page document that can be digitally printed if needed in small print runs (50-100 are viable). However the most likely delivery mode is digital, either as an email attachment or as a download link from a website.

The PDF file format is great because in can be output as a press quality file with all of the printers’ technical needs catered for. However it can be down-sampled to provide a file of suitable size for web/email based transmission. In addition, these web-based PDF files offer good levels of interactivity, a particular strength is the ability to incorporate hot-links to web addresses in the document.

At last some sun, some light and a chance to get out with the camera.

There is something about photography that is very pleasing and whilst I try not to be too wrapped up with technology, the tactile nature of cameras cannot be denied.

The Leica M9 certainly pushes many of my buttons. For a long time digital photography seems to have been returning to a level once enjoyed by film based technology. This Leica seems to have at last regained lost ground. Ken Rockwell’s various articles are illuminating. Recently the pixel war has turned with cameras such as the Canon G11 superceding the G10 but with a much lower pixel count although Rockell points to the S90 as the choice of the pack here.

Technology will always be an undeniable aspect of the process of photography. In the case of modern compacts it affects the intimacy that we have with our cameras, objects that are now held at arms length and observed.

I try to remind myself that the 35mm camera was in truth an artefact of another film technology and as such many of the aspects of this form were accidental rather than archetypal

So, when we refer to ‘full frame’ sensors, yes I would agree that this is a good thing, I miss the control over depth of field that a larger contact area offers. However it should be remembered that this format isn’t an absolute any more that 6×6, 6×7, 6×4.5 are, they are just reference points.

The Leica? Well if you need a reference point this seems as good as it gets for me. I feel somewhat comforted by the knowledge that I still can’t afford a Leica, but once again there is one there that I yearn for and has a meaningful place in photography.

Twitter seems to tell me that I am not alone.
