Design for Print (+)
- December 28th, 2009
So, design for print, for screen, ultimately it is about communication. Whether it’s a brochure, a leaflet or a cool logo we are trying to communicate.
Whether you are communicating thoughts, ideas, products or services it needs to be done effectively and clearly.
The print process is pleasing, there is something about a press room that I love. Frequently huge investments in machinery that, in the case of litho. print, is based on the most bizarre of processes.
Increasingly technology is part of the process, PDF workflows are great, and digi. print continues to offer new options.
Web and Screen
Less than two decades ago I can remember someone saying to me “I have just found this great way to communicate, it is called email” (la Eatough) .
In retrospect I was there at an early stage, hacking around with websites, not knowing why things weren’t as I wanted them to be. A long period of disillusionment followed, design was my thing not technology. Too much frustration.
Designers of course weren’t meant to make things look pretty the way they did.
Recently I have put a lot of hard work into getting to grips with the techy stuff again, yes I am a believer. Still frustrations to be had, was IE6 (and 5) created just so that people had to create workarounds? CSS is not easy to start with but my how it has changed things.
But now this stuff is maturing. The ability for communication is fearsome for those who have.
