The Short and Simple Story of the Credit Crisis: Vimeo

OK you may, or may not agree with the content, but it’s a nice example of how simple graphic style can be used to communicate effectively.

One thing that you are taught about teaching well is the importance of pace and this certainly has it.

Another great vid from Vimeo.

The goal of giving form to a complex situation like the credit crisis is to quickly supply the essence of the situation to those unfamiliar and uninitiated. This project was completed as part of my thesis work in the Media Design Program, a graduate studio at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

The Sandpit by Sam O’Hare: Vimeo

Another great Vimeo moment here, a day in the life of New York City, in miniature. This short by aero director/ VFX artist Sam O’Hare is inspired by films like Koyaanisqatsi

Winner:
Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction 2010
Original Music:
composed by Human, co-written by Rosi Golan and Alex Wong.

Please view in HD and full screen for best effect.

SAM: It is shot on a Nikon D3 (and one shot on a D80), as a series of stills. I used my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 lenses for all of these shots. Most were shot at 4fps in DX crop mode, which is the fastest the D3 could continuously write out to the memory card. The boats had slower frame rates, and the night shots used exposures up to two seconds each. The camera actually has an automatic cut off after 130 shots, so for longer shots I counted each click and quickly released and re-pressed the shutter release after 130 to keep shooting.

ME: That has to be a lot of stills!

SAM: I shot over 35,000.

The Third & The Seventh: Vimeo

A beautiful piece by Alex Roman. His request is ‘fullscreen it, please.’ I have to add, if you can, play it through a good sound system or headphones.

A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.

INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.

The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today’s pop culture.

“Influencers” belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

I found this the other day and thought about the visual appeal of the video and saved the draft to upload later. In the interim though I thought about how the video was done, having noted that is was shot on a Canon 550D.

I guess this explains the technology,

Full HD movie recording

The EOS 550D combines exceptional still shooting with the ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) video. To satisfy your creativity the EOS 550D features full manual control and selectable frame rates. You can also shoot high speed 50/60fps movies at 720P for when the action is really fast. An HDMI connection allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV. Also with compatible TVs playback can be controlled using the TV’s remote control.
