Photography: It’s Not About The Tech.
If you’ve been following this blog you will have seen these photos before. Bottom line is that I should have been back in Bern yesterday but there’s too much on here. However I was reminded of Marion’s hospitality when she opened up the teo jakob shops so that I could look round and photograph them.
This leads me to why I am re-posting the shots. I had a quick look at the posts and am slightly ‘gob-struck’ by what an ageing pocket camera, the Canon IXUS 70 can come up with. Yes I know these images won’t bear full professional scrutiny but, to be able to hack round a hurriedly opened store, fire away at a range of light sources without any added lighting aids, and open this kind of thing up is quite spectacular (I think.)
I have previously shown what can be achieved with relatively (by today’s standards) low-tech gear. Yep, I would still love a Leica M9 but, it’s worth remembering it’s not all about the gear.
Welt aus Schrift – World as Words
Welt aus Schrift – The 20th Century in Europe and the USA
At its heart, this exhibition, organized by the Art Library, explores the sign system formed by the many alphabet fonts used in Europe and the USA since 1890, and how that sign system was variously dissected and recreated over time in books, magazines, advertising, posters and printed matter of every kind. With more than 500 objects on display, visitors are granted a comprehensive insight into the linguistic diversity of graphic design.
Photos of the Welt aus Schrift posters outside the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin. An excellent exhibition focussing on European and American fonts and applied graphics.
Satisfying my love of Bauhaus it was great to see works and artefacts by Moholy-Nagy, Mies van der Rohe and of course Herbert Bayers’ Universal.
Whilst physically compact the exhibition covers a lot of ground with high walls covered. It would be great to see this exhibition travel.
Marion’s appartment Bern
To turn up at the home of someone who you have never met before and ask to take photographs of it may seem a tad forward.
However with an apartment containing pieces such as Castiglioni lamps, Antonio Citterio daybeds and Arne Jacobsen chairs it would almost have seen rude not to. Marion was incredibly welcoming, (thanks too for the Prosecco and the delightful meal @ Café du Commerce ).
As with the ‘teo jakob’ photos these were shot handheld on a little Canon Ixus70 with no additional lighting.
Enjoy…
teo jakob Bern
As promised some more images from an afternoon’s private view of the teo jakob shops in Bern.
Many thanks to Marion Vogler for her time and enthusiasm for her subject, impressive stuff.
