Mark Ormrod

Mark Ormrod

I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting and listening to Mark Ormrod talk this morning during a breakfast business networking meeting at Woodbury Park near Exeter.

Frequently one is left with little other than the aftertaste of poor coffee following such meetings, this one was a massive exception.

Mark spoke at length about his life experiences, it was captivating and inspiring. Further to that he spoke of the work of the Royal Marines Association (RMA), I would urge you to visit Mark’s personal website and that of the RMA.

I suspect few of us can fail to have been moved by Mark’s at time jaw-dropping sense of humour, whilst at the same time I imagine we have all been deeply educated and informed.

The injuries I sustained in Afghanistan changed my life…… but they do not define it….. The skills and qualities that I have learnt in the military are what got me to where I am today. I hope to use the knowledge and experience I have gained since that fateful day to continue down the path I am on, continue to learn, grow, improve and keep setting and reaching my goals.

Design? Don’t Make Me LOL

Some years ago I read in the D&AD Annual Awards book mention that (to simplify) ‘there was some good graphic design out there, but not much sign of humour.’ The words struck at the time, I suspect I also thought “guilty as charged.”

Not so long ago I attended a design networking event and to be honest, on the surface we could have been at a wake. Even today there is the tendency towards ‘design mafia’ attire, black with err black. Only designers could have a colour called ‘cool grey’ and, not happy with one we have eleven cool greys! That’s not to mention Pantones 400 to 446. Watch out for the Warm Greys though, far too cozy for my liking.

Wordyprocessy: Deep joy

Sometimes things enter our culture and everyone bangs on about them: Facebook, Twitter, Quorn. You know, endless updates of how good, great, bad awful, life-savingly dangerous it all is. In these endless rants the thing itself gets lost, becomes less important than the talk about it.

But then some things sneak in through the back door and we don’t really notice, deep joy. Yes that’s one, “Deep Joy”, Stanley Unwin I think started that phrase. It’s a term that I have used for years, but then I have had a few years to use it. Recently the great Über Luvvie himself Stephen (2 mill) Fry was outed on TV for being the originator of the term Luvvie. He feigned shame but who wouldn’t get a smug satisfaction from adding to a language? Before I move on, Achingly Beautiful any one? My suspicions are that it is the Nosferatu like used car salesman who briefly played with the Big Bores on TV car shows. I’m sorry but cars, even Ferrari 250′s, Achingly Beautiful?
