Last year Hazelwood introduced their new brand and holiday rental brochure designed by us as well as their new WordPress website.

The new simplified brochure makes use of photography supplied by Hazelwood. Text was created for Design Credo by Karen Brookes-Ferrari. The overall approach was to offer a concise quality message that communicated the excellent Hazelwood provision. Print was by Hazelwood’s preferred supplier, Swiftprint of Dawlish and the brochure has bee printed to a very high standard on improved stock with a gloss laminate.

Pulling up I was immediately greeted, welcomed and engaged in conversation with Ian the production director about my BMW R1200GS. He has the newer version, we both recognised that whilst it is a fantastic bike the truth is there are only a few bikes that men of a certain age are allowed to ride. Simon joined us sadly now without his lovely Aprilia but the keeper of a neat looking Greaves. Hey ho, time to get inside the building, there is a huge chunk of Heidleberg 75XL waiting to run some print. Once inside further discussions about the merits of the Honda SP2 (Castrol livery) with the staff in the estimating room, oh yes. Wincanton partner with Prodrive so I was expecting conversation to be more Aston Martin focussed but then I don’t actually own an Aston.

This was the tour, well equipped studio, lots of Macs, neat and tidy, then lovely Agfa computer to plate setup, tipping out plates quicker than an office photocopier, then the noise and smell of the print shop floor. Two generously sized Heidleberg 75XL presses with all that one might hope to find to finish the job in-house. And of course the little old Heidleberg Platen sat in the corner now cutting rather than printing.

My proofs were on the table, the Fedrigoni paper was loaded in the press and soon the first pass was through the various stations and out the back of the press waiting to be released from the cage. Good, looks nice, maybe a little more warmth? No problem we’ll dial in 10% more yellow. I could never be a printer though, there is no way I could carry such a huge stack of paper back to the other end of the press without dropping it. Actually I could’nt pick it up in the first place, paper is heavy.

I’ve said it before, there’s huge financial investment in print houses, this is a 24 hour establishment, this machinery needs to keep printing, day and night, night and day. And it is refreshing to witness a busy establishment but one that finds time to welcome customers on what is in truth a relatively small job. But the litho is only part of it, there is a full compliment of digi print facility in a shed down the road with some awesome ways to cut things out.

For now though I am happy that this job is in good hands, and as I sit here hours later I wonder if the sheets have been backed up yet. Somewhere there is a small palette with my job on it, amongst all the others.

The journey home was briefly a shared experience with someone else on a GS (adventure) before I pulled off to visit Annie’s cafe on the A303. It was on telly you know and in a book, you buy the book there, real paper, real ink.

This new look will be applied to standard printed business materials such as letterheads and compliments slips as well as brochures and flyers. In addition to this the design will be applied to signage around the South Devon holiday park.

The design is an evolution of the existing brand and has been created with ease of use and consistency across various types of media in mind. The new look is currently being implemented across digital media and communication as well as signage throughout Hazelwood’s quality holiday park. In addition to this specific logo forms have been developed for Hazelwood’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Rather than ‘re-invent the wheel’ Design Credo chose to refine and simply the elements of the existing brand whilst adding new secondary aspects to communicate the fun of a Devon holiday.

Working on behalf of Turner-Locker Exeter’s commercial property agency, the project has so far included photography, graphic design and print management.

The Forum offers a prime office location in central Exeter with excellent local facilities and close proximity to the Princesshay shopping facility

Commercial Office Brochure Design

Due to the needs of this kind of commission large print runs are not necessary and would be both unnecessarily costly and environmentally inconsiderate. This brochure has been designed as an A4 two page document that can be digitally printed if needed in small print runs (50-100 are viable). However the most likely delivery mode is digital, either as an email attachment or as a download link from a website.

The PDF file format is great because in can be output as a press quality file with all of the printers’ technical needs catered for. However it can be down-sampled to provide a file of suitable size for web/email based transmission. An extra page has been added for the PDF version to add supporting information.

There are many many people who I have utter respect for. Beyond that there are others who I am more than a little in awe of. Erik Spiekermann is someone in this latter group. I guess though, that this page was exactly what I exactly what I expected and merely serves to reinforce my respect.

It is easy to overlook typeface design, this video (more of a mini-documentary really) gives a great insight into the process.

Working alongside Tiger Developments, Alder King and Haarer Goss, the project has so far included photography, graphic design and website design.

Park 5 offers superb out of town office location. The modern office suites offer superb access to a range of transport options, local commerce and an increasing range of high quality local facilities.

Supporting photography was commissioned to add focus to the excellent location of Park5, particularly to rail and air networks as well as quality local out of town facilities.

In addition, these web-based PDF files offer good levels of interactivity, a particular strength is the ability to incorporate hot-links to web addresses in the document.

With strong design that includes 3D typography and sculptural installations this is an impressive shop.

What added to the experience was the staff, helpful polite. Often it seems that organisations forget that Brand is about so much more than a neat strap-line. Brands are complete holistic expressions, if your organisation is best expressed by a group of people huddled smoking by your front doorway then, well, good luck to you.

Further down the street we ventured into Hamley’s. I’m sorry, I’ve been there once before and it was the same experience repeated, where’s the magic? Hamley’s were well and truly rounded on prior to Christmas for their decision to put live penguins in the shop, much of this opposition was very public by people using social media, principally Twitter. People do care, people have opinions, and beware, people are increasingly empowered to express those opinions.

Anyway, well done Nike for your great and creative use of design.

The online retailer of flower girl dresses approached Design Credo having seen the recent rebrand for Sarah Treble Couture now based in the South West. Ha Ngo of Perfume River said that she was impressed by both the crisp clean design of Sarah’s new brand as well as the new Sarah Treble WordPress based website designed by us.

The brief was to create a simple clean logo that expresses “wedding” simply and effectively. This logo will need to be applied across a range of media, from websites and print to stitched dress labels. In order to accommodate the latter, a simplified version of the logo has been created.

It was felt that the existing logo (below) wasn’t suitable for Perfume River’s planned future developments whereas the new design will support future developments
