Teo Jakob, Bern 2013

It’s not the first time I have been here but always great to re-visit Teo Jakob in Bern.

They seem happy to have people just mooching round with a camera. I guess I may use these as backgrounds some day, who knows?

Dieter Rams: Braun

One of the more self indulgent lessons that I have taught is where I presented a PowerPoint (ugh) of ‘designs wot I like.’ This is a mix of about 50 items including E Types, Minis, 911′s, Trangia cookers, and Thunderbird 2. It is an unashamedly subjective list. The lesson was intended to generated thought and discussion about design in its wider context. I had many of the items to show: Belstaff, Trangia, Thunderbird 2, sadly though neither the 911 nor the E Type.

And one of the items, the Braun travel alarm clock has been with me for years. This small item shows how affordable, and accessible well designed items can be.

Yes I unashamedly enjoy it.

I was impressed by Braun well before I even started to think overtly about design. I had a Braun flashgun that came with a camera I once bought, it just seemed right, considered and somehow more complete.

More recently of course I have become aware of the originator of many of the Braun designs, Dieter Rams. Few (including Dieter himself) could fail to acknowledge the influence that his designs have had on Apple, he applauds this, graciously.

The Third & The Seventh: Vimeo

A beautiful piece by Alex Roman. His request is ‘fullscreen it, please.’ I have to add, if you can, play it through a good sound system or headphones.

A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.

Marion’s appartment Bern

To turn up at the home of someone who you have never met before and ask to take photographs of it may seem a tad forward.

However with an apartment containing pieces such as Castiglioni lamps, Antonio Citterio daybeds and Arne Jacobsen chairs it would almost have seen rude not to. Marion was incredibly welcoming, (thanks too for the Prosecco and the delightful meal @ Café du Commerce ).

As with the ‘teo jakob’ photos these were shot handheld on a little Canon Ixus70 with no additional lighting.

Enjoy…
